Summary

Fan art reimagines the Avengers with 1990s stars, offering a glimpse into an alternate Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU’s future includes The Multiverse Saga, Kang the Conqueror, and Avengers: Secret Wars, potentially leading to a soft reboot. New characters, such as Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop, will join the old heroes, while Sam Wilson takes on the mantle of Captain America.

The Avengers get recast with 1990s stars, showing a very different version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in fan art. Since 2008, the MCU has been one of the biggest Hollywood franchises of all time as several Marvel heroes and villains have been able to come to life on the big and small screens. MCU Phase 1 was the birth of the Avengers, leading to some of the highest-grossing box office movies of this generation.

However, the superhero landscape could have looked very different if the MCU had started in the 1990s rather than in the late 2000s. To demonstrate that, House of Mat shared artwork of a total of 16 actors as members of the Avengers and the larger MCU in a very What If…? way with massive Hollywood stars.

For a full breakdown, the Avengers fan art features Eddie Murphy as Falcon, Tom Cruise as Iron Man, Brad Pitt as Thor, Michael J Fox as Spider-Man, Brooke Shields as Pepper Potts, Brendan Fraser as Star-Lord, Keanu Reeves as Doctor Strange, David Duchovny as Ant-Man, Denzel Washington as Black Panther, Alicia Silverstone as Scarlet Witch, Ben Stiller as Ant-Man, Leonardo DiCaprio as Captain America, Cuba Gooding Jr. as War Machine, Johnny Depp as Hawkeye, Dolph Lundgren as Vision, and Sandra Bullock as The Wasp.

While the Avengers franchise hit a massive point with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the future of the team is only getting bigger. With The Multiverse Saga currently in Phase 5, the MCU is slowly getting closer to Avengers. The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will feature the finale against Kang the Conqueror. While it hasn’t been fully confirmed, it is rumored that Avengers: Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot for the MCU as they go into Phase 7 and beyond.

Even though it shouldn’t be a big surprise if all the Avengers are back for the respective two movies, Marvel Studios has not revealed any further details yet other than that Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Assumingly, the old heroes will be united with the newer characters that have entered the MCU over the last few movies and TV shows, from Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop as Hawkeye, and Yelena Belova as the new main Black Widow. In the meantime, the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, has his own movie coming out with Captain America: Brave New World, as he is the direct replacement for Steve Rogers while Thor is still out there.

It will certainly be interesting to witness what the Avengers look like before and after Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. If the MCU is really heading for a soft reboot, it will be intriguing to see what the franchise will be, especially if the X-Men are also meant to play a huge part in the universe going forward. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what is coming for the Avengers over the next couple of years.
