News of Avengers: Doomsday continues to drop as Marvel officially releases a large portion of the starring cast alongside some possibly leaked concept art that depicts a lot of awesome scenarios, such as God Emperor Doom and “Planet Hulk.” With the return of Patrick Stewart and many other actors from the Fox X-Men era, fans are curious about what role Marvel’s mutants will play.
The writers and directors of Avengers: Doomsday have the vast library of Marvel comics to pull from when crafting the new MCU X-Men tale. The X-Men can exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through time travel, parallel Earths or reality manipulations by powerful mutants like Nathan Grey or Scarlet Witch.

Scarlet Witch Erased The MCU’s Mutants
House of M by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Tim Townsend & Frank D’Armata
During the House of M event, Scarlet Witch created a new reality where mutants were the dominant species on Earth, dwarfing the human population and ending the war on her kind. In this world, Magento was one of the leaders and the X-Men were celebrities and beloved heroes.
After Wolverine discovered the world was a lie, Scarlet Witch nearly destroyed the mutants with her infamous “No more mutants” spell. This could explain why there are so few mutants in the MCU and why their numbers are slowly growing again, ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

The X-Men Team Up With The Avengers
Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender, John Cassaday & Laura Martin
During the Marvel NOW! era, Marvel published a series titled Uncanny Avengers, teaming X-Men like Rogue and Scarlet Witch up with the Avengers like Captain America. This title could serve as inspiration for the X-Men and Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday, as they’ll both face the common threat of Doctor Doom.

Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, is one of the most popular X-Men around, yet there are certain details that everyone seems to forget about her character.
Uncanny Avengers should serve as a blueprint for the MCU going forward if the MCU does continue after Avengers: Doomsday. The X-Men would naturally team up with the rest of the heroes, if only to bolster their public image.

The X-Men Start Fresh In The MCU
“Yesterday’s X-Men” by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen, Mahmud Asrar & more
Beast traveled back in time to collect the original First Class X-Men in the All-New X-Men series. This could have had much graver consequences, such as disputing the entire space-time continuum, but it instead led to an interesting era in X-Men comics that forced the mutants to look in the mirror, comparing who they were to the anti-heroes some of them had become.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Beast could similarly go back in time to collect versions he believes are the purest heroes. These younger versions of the X-Men could survive Doctor Doom’s plan and live on as the standard X-Men of the MCU.

“Battle of the Atom” by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Brian Wood, Frank Cho, Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo, David Lopez & Giuseppe Camuncoli
“Battle of the Atom” was a crossover event during the Marvel NOW! era that saw versions of the X-Men travel back in time from the future. These different versions of the X-Men went to war with each other, and this idea could serve as inspiration for Avengers: Doomsday.

The X-Men Fight Internally Over MCU Issues
“Schism” by Jason Aaron, Carlos Pacheco, Frank Cho, Daniel Acuña, Alan Davis & Adam Kubert
Cyclops and Wolverine’s growing feud came to a head in the “Schism” story arc when they argued over how to deal with the threat of Bastion and the Sentinels. More than their love triangle with Jean Grey, Cyclops and Wolverine are opposites.
Fans know that James Marsden’s Cyclops will be in Avengers: Doomsday, but will Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine? If so, fans could see a version of “Schism” on the big screen. Instead of the Sentinels, the two mutant leaders could fight over how to handle Doctor Doom.

Avengers vs. X-Men by Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman, John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel & Adam Kubert
Avengers: Doomsday might as well be titled “Avengers vs. X-Men,” especially after a good portion of the announced cast will be playing mutants. The Avengers and X-Men have rarely gotten along, thanks to their different ideals and objectives.

While Doctor Doom is widely known as one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest villains, he has developed rivalries with more than a few Marvel heroes.
In the original Avengers vs. X-Men comic event, the two teams fought over the solution to the Phoenix Force––whether to keep it, exile it or even destroy it. In Avengers: Doomsday, Doctor Doom himself could be the catalyst that drives the Avengers and X-Men to conflict.

Hope Summers & Cable Travel To The MCU’s Past
“Messiah Complex” / “Messiah War” / “Second Coming” by Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Peter David, Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, Marc Silvestri, Billy Tan, Scot Eaton, Humberto Ramos, Chris Bachalo & more
Hope Summers is often known as the Mutant Messiah. She is an extremely powerful telepath who has bonded with the Phenix Force. In the “Messiah Complex” trilogy, Hope and Cable travel from the future, alerting present-day X-Men villains like Bastion.
While the intricacies of the “Messiah Complex” and “Second Coming” story arcs may be too complex for the already-stuffed Avengers: Doomsday, the idea of Hope Summers and Cable changing the past could serve as backstory for the X-Men in the MCU.

Nate Grey Changed The MCU’s Reality
Age of X-Man by Zac Thompson, Lonnie Nadler, Marco Failla & Matt Milla
Like Scarlet Witch before him in House of M, Nathan Grey, otherwise known as the X-Man, manipulated reality to create a paradise for the X-Men. Here, mutants like Jean Grey, Magneto and Colossus were admired heroes.

Marvel Studios’ huge cast reveal for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday included the surprise return of several stars from Fox’s X-Men universe.
During the Age of X-Man event, many mutants disappeared from Earth-616, which could be a solid reason for the X-Men’s absence in the MCU so far. What if Nate Grey had already manipulated reality, severing the X-Men from the rest of the world? Only with the emergence of Doctor Doom do the X-Men break free from X-Man’s false paradise.

The X-Men Come From The Age Of Apocalypse
Age of Apocalypse by Scott Lobdell, Mark Waid, Fabian Nicieza, John Francis Moore, Larry Hama, Warren Ellis, Jeph Loeb, Roger Cruz, Steve Epting, Joe Madureira, Andy Kubert, Tony Daniel & more
In the Age of Apocalypse event, Legion went back in time and murdered Professor X when Magneto was his intended target. This event caused a ripple in the timeline that led to Apocalypse ruling the world and Magneto leading a fractured, darker version of the X-Men.
Age of Apocalypse could serve as inspiration for a world unfamiliar with the X-Men. Legion could have already gone back in time and erased someone from the past who led to this reality. Perhaps the X-Men fans see in Avengers: Doomsday look more like the ones from Age of Apocalypse instead of the Earth-616 versions.

The X-Men Have Lived In Peace On Krakoa
House of X/Powers of X by Jonathan Hickman, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia & more
“While you slept, the world changed.” Professor X delivered his imposing speech to the world in House of X, forcefully putting his foot down for the mutant’s sovereignty and freedom. What if the world already changed in the MCU without anyone noticing?
Thanks to Moira’s powers of reincarnation, the X-Men could have already existed in a previous timeline without the Avengers’ knowledge. The X-Men who appear in Avengers: Doomsday could emerge from their hidden Krakoa home to challenge Doctor Doom, who could have possibly outed their existence to the world.
X-Men
Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.
Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world’s second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel’s most popular and important franchises.
